Proprietary is great when used in closed user/restricted user group. Whether on a University Campus or a retail chain, but I read today about the launch of droplet below, it works on only one type of handset, at two retailers. Realistically where is this going?
Droplet launches m-payment services in UK
UK-based mobile payments startup Droplet has launched its service in collaboration with retailers Chiltern Railways and Airparks. The mobile application is available on iOS and it allows users to load cash onto their smartphone and transfer funds to other users.
Droplet does not require merchants to use a custom debit or credit card reader. Instead, users pay by scanning a unique bar code with their phone when they reach the till.
Droplet has also launched a new platform dubbed Droplet Tools which allows developers to build customized features for merchants, such as discounts or a reward schemes
